KAPIT by Ariani
As years go by and times change, it is always a comfort to have some traditions – some ‘constants’ – to hold on to. They take us back to simpler times in life and inadvertently keep us grounded. Being in Malaysia, it is no surprise that a big part of local traditions revolve around food – especially those related to festivals, no matter which culture you are from.
At one point in every Malaysian’s life, we would be introduced to a love letter – but not just any love letter! It’s the Chinese love letter, or more fondly known by locals as kuih kapit. A delicacy typically made during Chinese New Year, the kuih kapit resembles a traditional Chinese fan which easily became a daily delight nationwide; Malays, Chinese, and Indians alike. Who doesn’t love the fragrant scent of this crispy ‘crepes’ that have flavourful hints of coconut? Even the sight of the metal tins (remember those?) can make your mouth water!
In collaboration with local artisanal brand Bingka KL, Kapit by Ariani aims to celebrate a long-celebrated tradition that Malaysians hold close to our hearts. True to Malaysian culture, it is not the difference in ethnicities that define this nation – it is the love for each other’s cultures, in spite of it.
